It’s hard to believe it was the 6th week of harvest already this season! It’s a busy time, with lots of bed prep and plantings. I’m grateful for yesterday’s rain, and I think grateful for today’s hail (as it’s moisture and that’s good). But we had fun anyhow, dodging the pellets for today’s harvest. It was surprising cold, but the good chear of all the helpers kept the spirits up, as did the warm tea and Shelly’s yummy coffee cake. The box was full of a lot of spring greens from the greenhouses again. But soon early carrots and broccoli should be in the boxes! A lot of the outdoor planting has been done — carrots, cucumbers, summer squash and zucchini, and bush beans planted in the past few days. And broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, leeks, onions, snow peas, and garlic are already in the ground in the field — promising an abundance of summer veggies. The tomatoes in the greenhouse have flowers, and I’m off to finish training them up the supports. That’s all for now, but I’m glad to FINALLY update this — thanks to the hail and my daughter reminding me how to do it! Maybe I’ll remember to do it again before long, and even insert a photo…

Happy spring!

Sunday, July 12th

This week has been an exciting and inspiring one at the farm! Thursday is our harvest day and we had the usual “charter members” helping out as usual. There’s nothing quite like the sound of people hard at work in the greenhouse at 8 am! Harvest days have become well-oiled days of cooperation where huge volumes of veggies get processed likady split!

Friday saw more folks show up to help out and weed, weed, weed galore in the lower field. The sight of a half dozen folks weeding the field sure does put a smile on the face! Lots of great conversations, connection, and the joy of the kids finding the biggest strawberry ever!!! Top it off with a goat in labour next door, and it’s a mighty fine day.

On Saturday and today more folks showed up. People bring their friends and family from afar to help out, all doing what they like to do which corresponds with what others don’t like to do. Diversity at work!!

Now it’s lunch time as we harvest more and more buckets of cherries before the worms get to them. Busy and fulfilling days here all around.
